More Options: Socks For Comfort and Self Expression

Author: Branka Ilech

Next time you go shopping, don't just automatically reach for the standard package of white cotton sports, or brown dress socks. Today, you can think about what you want to say with your socks, how you want them to feel, and most importantly, what role they will play in your comfort level.

Some of us are warm fuzzy types, while others prefer the slick lines of a silk pinstripe. For all tastes there is now something interesting and personal in today's sock brands.

First of all, it's important to realize that there are many different materials that socks are made of - from the natural to the synthetic - and they will each give you a different feel and will be worn for different purposes.

* Cotton. Socks make from cotton have that natural feel and can either be worn in their natural color, or dyed to give a variety. Many athletic socks are made from this fiber.

* Wool. If you live in a cold climate, then you understand the absolute luxury of a wool sock. This fiber is ideal for keeping your feet warm and toasty.

* Nylon. This synthetic fiber allows a sock to stretch without compromising its durability. It is mostly used for dress socks and other special occasion socks.

* Elastic. If you've ever experienced a sock that simply won't stay up, then you understand the special role that elastic can play. Placed around the top of the sock, it will keep it from slipping down your leg. Lycra socks work with this principle and are designed to hold to you better.

* Silk. The ultimate in luxury, silk socks are generally worn for business or dressier occasions.

Now you know what socks are made from, have a look at the major styles that they come in.

Dress Socks

Usually made from synthetic fibers, dress socks are generally made in typical colors such as black, brown, gray, white and navy blue. You can buy them with ribs, sheer, or a thicker style mixed with cotton. They almost all have an elastic band at the top to prevent slippage.

Sports Socks

Almost all sports socks are made from cotton, but some of them are combined with man-made fibers to increase their durability. They generally come in white, but many have stripes or other designs. You can choose between thicknesses, depending on the type of sport you are wearing.

Crew Socks

Crew socks come in full size (to stop half-way up the calf) or quarter crew, which cover just above your ankle. They usually have ribbed tops that are fitted with elastic to keep them up during play or athletic activities. They can be natural or bleached white with rings of colors around the top. These socks are the most popular and are worn with just about anything, from shorts, jeans to work-out clothes.

Fun Socks

Socks aren't just about durability and comfort-they're also about style. It's possible to get socks suited to your personality by choosing different colors, designs or even ones with photos and cartoons on them. In addition, if you really want to have some fun, try wearing the toe socks that have individual pockets for each of your ten toes-sure to keep you warm in the winter and start a few conversations!

There you have it - enough information to buy socks with confidence. Perhaps its time for you to experiment a little?
